日本のマラソン大会では初めてとなる「Jブルークレジット®」を活用した

地産地消型カーボン・オフセットを実施

2025年2月23日（日）に、広島県尾道市瀬戸田町で第3回目となる「せとだレモンマラソン 2025」（主催：せとだレモンマラソン実行委員会 / 運営事務局：株式会社しおまち企画）が開催されます。すでにエントリーは終了し、1,351名のランナーが参加予定です。

 

「せとだレモンマラソン」は、第1回目の開催時より地域に長く愛される大会を目指して、メインスポンサーの株式会社ゴールドウインと共に、従来の大会運営方法を見直し、サステナブルな運営方法を模索してきました。今大会では、日本のマラソン大会では初めてとなる「Jブルークレジット®」を活用した地産地消型カーボン・オフセットを行います。そのほかにも環境に配慮した取り組みを行なっていきます。

 

※Jブルークレジット®とは、ジャパンブルーエコノミー技術研究組合が、独立した第三者委員会による審査・意見を経て、認証・発行・管理する独自のクレジットであり、一般的な国際標準とされる100年間以上の長期にわたって沿岸域・海洋に貯留されるべき二酸化炭素の数量を客観的方法論に基づき科学的合理的に算定し、これを認証・発行しているものです。

 

株式会社ゴールドウインと共に行う
環境に配慮した2つの取り組み

１：二酸化炭素排出量の可視化とオフセット

今後も2月の日差しが柔らかく心地よい気候の中で「せとだレモンマラソン」を続けていくために、今大会では株式会社ゴールドウインの協力のもと、開催における二酸化炭素排出量を可視化し、大部分を占める参加者の移動に関わる二酸化炭素排出量の一部をオフセットします（二酸化炭素排出量は、ランナーの居住地、移動手段、宿泊場所などの情報をもとに計測予定）。

 

購入するカーボンクレジットは、尾道市のブルーカーボン・オフセット推進事業「尾道の海のゆりかご（干潟・藻場）再生による里海づくり」によってクレジット化された「Jブルークレジット®」。この事業ではクレジット販売による利益を藻場の再生事業に活用するため、せとだレモンマラソンがオフセットすることでカーボンニュートラルに近づけるだけではなく、海の生態系の回復にも繋げることができます。

 

※藻場（もば）とは、海藻や海草が密生している沿岸の浅い海域のことで、海の「ゆりかご」とも呼ばれます。多くの魚介類が産卵や成長を行う場として利用され、豊かな生態系を支える重要な役割を果たしています。

 

２：マイボトルランの継続

せとだレモンマラソンでは、第1回目よりランナーの理解のもとマイボトルの携帯をルール化しており、使い捨てカップの使用は廃止し、さらに大会から排出されるごみ削減に取り組んでいます。また、ランナーには参加賞として繰り返し使うことができる「THE NORTH FACEのシリコーン製カップ」を提供しており、コース内にごみの出ない給水システムを導入しています。

 

今大会でも引き続きマイボトルランをルール化することによって、大会開催期間中に出るごみを可能な限り少なくしています。

 

パートナー企業との3つの取り組み

１：回収した古着をアップサイクルしたワッペンの配布

第1回目大会より、不要になった衣服を回収しケミカルリサイクルを行う「BRING」と連携し、せとだレモンマラソンでは衣服の回収ボックスを設置してきました。今大会でも同様の取り組みを行うだけではなく、前回大会までに回収した衣服を使ったオリジナルワッペンを参加特典として配布します。

 

※ケミカルリサイクルとは、使用済みプラスチックなどの化学的処理を行い、原料の分子レベルに分解して再利用するリサイクル方法です。

 

２：マルシェ / 後夜祭にアルミカップを導入

今大会よりアルミニウムメーカーとして国内シェアトップである「株式会社ＵＡＣＪ」の協力のもと、大会期間中に開催されるマルシェと後夜祭において、リユース＋水平リサイクルができるアルミカップを導入します。出店者の理解を得てルール化することで、使い捨てカップの利用をなくし、ごみの排出量を抑えます。

 

※水平リサイクルとは、使用済み製品を原料として再び同じ種類の製品を製造するリサイクルの手法です。例えば、アルミカップの場合は、使用したアルミカップを再びアルミカップ（またはアルミ缶）の素材にリサイクルします。

 

３：オリジナルタオルに生分解性のある素材を使用

せとだレモンマラソンの完走賞として配布するオリジナルタオルは、製造から処分までのCO₂排出量が石油由来のポリエステル素材（PET繊維）と比較して約41%少ない「ピエクレックス」を採用します。これはトウモロコシやサトウキビ由来のポリ乳酸を原料としており、微生物によって分解される生分解性をもっています。

 

※生分解性とは、一定の条件下で水とCO₂に分解される性質を指します。ピエクレックスは、国際規格であるISO 14855-1（JIS K 6953-1）規格に準拠しています。

 

大会実行委員会としての取り組み

せとだレモンマラソンでは、可能な限り二酸化炭素を排出しないようにランナーへ働きかけるために、バスや電車などの公共交通機関の利用や、自動車の相乗りを事前に呼びかけています。ランナーにも無理のないかたちで環境に対する取り組みに参加していただくことで、地球に負担をかけない行動を起こしていきます。

 

また、大会期間中に出た廃棄食材を有効活用するべく、マルシェ会場にはコンポストステーションを設置します。加えて、紙製の配布物をなくしSNSやウェブサイト、メールなどを通してランナーとコミュニケーションをとることでも、ごみ削減ができるように働きかけています。

First Japanese marathon to use “J Blue Credits®” for locally produced, locally consumed carbon offsets

 

On Sunday, February 23, 2025, the third annual Setoda Lemon Marathon 2025 will be held in Setoda-cho, Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture (organized by the Setoda Lemon Marathon Executive Committee / managed by Shimachi-Kikaku Co. Entry has already closed, and 1,351 runners are expected to participate.

 

Since the first event, the Setoda Lemon Marathon, together with its main sponsor Goldwind Corporation, has been seeking a sustainable way to run the marathon by reviewing the conventional way of running such events. This year’s marathon will be the first marathon in Japan to offset carbon emissions through the use of “J Blue Credits®” for local production for local consumption. Other environmentally friendly initiatives will also be implemented on top of it.

 

*J Blue Credit® is a unique credit certified, issued, and managed by the Japan Blue Economy Technology Research Association after review and opinion by an independent third-party committee, and is based on an objective methodology to scientifically and rationally determine the amount of carbon dioxide that should be stored in coastal areas and oceans over a long period of 100 years or more, which is generally considered an international standard. Two Environmentally Conscious Initiatives with Goldwyn, Inc.

1: Visualization and offsetting of carbon dioxide emissions
In order to continue to hold the Setoda Lemon Marathon into the future, we will visualize the carbon dioxide emissions of the event and offset part of the carbon dioxide emissions from participants’ transportation, which accounts for the majority of all emissions in cooperation with Goldwind, Inc (carbon dioxide emissions will be measured based on information such as participants’ residence, means of transportation, and lodging locations).

 

The carbon credits to be purchased are “J Blue Credits®” that have been converted into credits through Onomichi City’s Blue Carbon Offset Promotion Project “Satoumi Creation through Onomichi Sea Cradle (tidal flat and seaweed bed) Restoration. The profits from the sale of the credits are used for seaweed bed restoration projects, so the offsetting by the Setoda Lemon Marathon will not only bring the marathon closer to carbon neutrality, but will also help restore the marine ecosystem.

 

*Moba (seaweed beds) are shallow coastal waters where seaweed and sea grass grow densely, and are also called the “cradle” of the sea. It is used by many fish and shellfish as a place to spawn and grow, and has an important role in supporting a rich ecosystem.

 

2: Continuation of the My Bottle Run
Since the first Setoda Lemon Marathon, with the understanding of runners, we have made it a rule to carry their own bottles and have eliminated the use of disposable cups, further reducing the amount of waste generated by the event. In addition, runners are provided with “THE NORTH FACE silicone cups,” which can be used repeatedly, as a participation prize, and a trash-free water supply system has been introduced on the course.

 

By continuing to make the My Bottle Run a compulsory practice at this year’s event, we are committed to minimizing the amount of trash generated during the event.

 

Three initiatives with partners

1: Distribution of patches made from upcycled secondhand clothing
Since the first event, the Setoda Lemon Marathon has been collaborating with BRING, a group that collects and chemically recycles used clothing, and has set up clothing collection boxes at the Setoda Lemon Marathon. Not only will similar efforts be made at this year’s marathon, but original badges made from clothes collected in previous years will be distributed as a participation bonus.

 

*Chemical recycling is a recycling method in which used plastics and other materials are chemically treated to break them down to the molecular level of their raw materials for reuse.

 

2: Introduction of Aluminum Cups at the market stalls / Post-event party
Ltd. (UACJ), the leading aluminum manufacturer in Japan, will introduce aluminum cups that can be reused and horizontally recycled at the on-event market and the night festival to be held after the convention. By gaining the understanding of stall holders and implementing the rule, the use of disposable cups will be eliminated and the amount of waste generated will be reduced.

 

*Horizontal recycling is a recycling method in which used products are used as raw materials to manufacture the same type of product again. For example, in the case of aluminum cups, used aluminum cups are recycled again into aluminum cup (or aluminum can) material.

 

3：Using biodegradable materials for original towels
The original towels to be distributed as finisher’s prizes for the Setoda Lemon Marathon will be made of “Pieklex,” which emits about 41% less CO₂ from production to disposal than petroleum-derived polyester material (PET fiber). It is made from polylactic acid derived from corn and sugarcane, and is biodegradable by microorganisms.

 

*Biodegradability refers to the property of being decomposed into water and CO₂ under certain conditions. Pieklex conforms to the ISO 14855-1 (JIS K 6953-1) international standard.

 

Efforts as a Marathon Organizing Committee

The Setoda Lemon Marathon encourages runners to use public transportation such as buses and trains, and to carpool in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions as much as possible. We take action to reduce a burden on the earth by encouraging runners to participate in environmental initiatives in a manageable way.

 

In addition, composting stations will be set up at the stall area to make effective use of food waste generated during the event. Furthermore, we eliminated all paper handouts and communicating with runners through social networking services, websites, and e-mail.
